We are working directly for an associate recruitment and HR consultancy based in Christchurch, New Zealand.
They currently have a number of clients who are seeking Quantity Surveyors / Estimators – Civil Contracting to work in New Zealand.  The roles are permanent.
The roles available will either be as Quantity Surveyors or as Estimators and will be working on large civil projects for large national construction companies but also for second tier locally based companies where you would be working directly for the owners of the company, so less corporate.
Although the exact responsibilities will vary from company to company , typical responsibilities as a Quantity Surveyor are as follows:
You will be responsible for a range of costing analysis/estimating, trade letting and invoice/claim preparation, variance pricing and reporting on a larger sized commercial construction project.
You will prepare tender and contract documents, including bills of quantities with the Architect and/or the client.
You will undertake costs analysis for project work.
You will assist in establishing a client`s requirements and undertake feasibility studies.
You will perform risk and value management and cost control.
You will advise on procurement strategy.
You will identify, analyse and develop responses to commercial risks.
You will prepare and analyse costings for tenders.
You will allocate work to subcontractors.
You will provide advice on contractual claims.
You will analyse outcomes and write detailed progress reports.
You will value completed work and arrange payments.
You will maintain awareness of the different building contracts in current use.
You will have an understanding the implications of health and safety regulations.
As an Estimator your typical responsibilities will be :
Working with Quantity Surveyors, you will estimate the type and amount of materials necessary to deliver the contract against the agreed specifications.
You will estimate the cost of plant and equipment.
Working with a Site Manager and Planning Engineer you will help predict the timescales of a project.

Knowledge and Skills:

You will be an experienced Quantity Surveyor or Estimator.
Your practical experience should be supported by a qualification in quantity surveying, estimating or in construction or equivalent.
You must have significant civil contracting and construction experience.
You will be experienced in the planning of major projects with particular emphasis on the utilization of estimating computer software.
In seeking applications our client is looking for Quantity Surveyors and Estimators that have gained that solid base of experience, who can demonstrate good technical skills, all round computer systems knowledge and strong attention to detail.
Candidates can have PQS background but there is stronger demand for candidates with site based civil construction experience and candidates with estimating experience.
You will be experienced in claims/arbitration procedures and methods in that you are able to prepare, present and negotiate contractual claims.
You will have excellent inter personal skills, in order to promote the company’s core values and culture.
You will be able to demonstrate competence in the areas of Health and Safety.
You will need to be very competent in managing the paper/communication trails, but will be aided by working with very strong business systems that allow you to control both internal and external processes.
You should be self-motivated, someone who enjoys dealing with people and who can show appropriate use of their own initiative.
You will have a high level of initiative, problem solving and will be someone who pays attention to the detail and highly organised.
You will have excellent time management, analytical skills and organisation skills.
You should possess excellent communication skills in English, able to adapt to rapid changes in a positive manner and work to tight deadlines.
Superb communication skills and instant credibility are essential as you will be inter-facing with a number of people from different backgrounds, nationalities and religions.
Finally you should possess a Drivers Licence and be PC literate with MS Office, e mail, the Internet.
Salary will typically be in a range of between 85,000 – 110,000 New Zealand Dollars (NZD). Salaries will depend upon experience and the more senior quantity Surveyor roles will have packages that include the use of a vehicle.
Candidates are expected to fund their own relocation and should therefore have around £2000 – £3000 available to cover flight costs, visa costs and relocation costs etc.
