Oaktree Manor specialises in working with men and women with a primary diagnosis of learning disability and sensory impairment, presenting with high risks of challenging behaviours and forensic history. Patients may also be diagnosed with co-existing conditions of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Asperger`s Syndrome or Personality Disorder.

Our Technical Instructor role involves:

  • Under the direction and supervision of the Lead Occupational Therapist/Therapists, assist the Occupational Therapists in delivery of Occupational Therapy services to patients in line with hospital and learning disability goals and objectives.
  • Positively promote recovery, engagement and social Inclusion.
  • Act as part of the Occupational Therapy team.
  • Promote the role of Occupational Therapy within the hospital.

To be successful as Technical Instructor you`ll need:

Qualifications & Experience

  • Driving License - essential
  • Qualification at NVQ level 3 or experience in horticulture/gardening -  desirable
  • Understanding of supporting individuals with a learning disability/ mental health would be desirable but not essential - desirable
  • Voluntary or paid work in a similar healthcare setting would be desirable, however not essential - desirable

Skills/Knowledge

  • Interest in working in a Multi-Disciplinary Team setting.
  • Ability to work with individuals with a mental health and learning disability diagnosis.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with people.
  • Ability to follow instructions, however show initiative where appropriate.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Ability to work within an Occupational Therapy philosophy.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • An ability to generate motivation in others.
  • Ability to pass on knowledge/demonstrate tasks to those who may have difficulty with concentration/attention.
  • Ability to modify interventions to meet patients identified treatment aims.
  • Ability to think flexibly/creatively when delivering interventions.
  • Ability to assume responsibility to ensure work practices and the environment meet the requirements of hospital policies and procedures.
  • Ability to assume responsibility and autonomy commensurate to the post.
  • Have an interest in a wide range of activities.
  • An awareness of Equal Opportunity issues.
  • Ability to facilitate group work and individual sessions.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Effective time-management skills and a flexible approach.
  • Work with a Patient centered approach.
  • A full driving license
  • Have knowledge of food hygiene and manual handling practices.
  • Be prepared to assist in practical tasks.
  • Promote the rights, responsibility and recovery of patients.
  • To have Completed full MVA training or the willingness to do so.
  • Have the skills to help identify early signs of relapse by monitoring the patient`s progress and level of functioning and mental state and alert the appropriate staff.
