Nelson House is a modern and spacious 32 bed locked rehabilitation recovery service for men and women with mental illness. By having a focus on the development of skills for independence the unit provides a positive step for patients, many whose next step will be living in the community. It helps patients learn new ways of managing their conditions and symptoms with the aim of helping to prevent any future relapse. For patients with challenging behaviours, Nelson House helps them to learn skills to change their response to anxiety and distress. 

The role:

To contribute and support the Occupational therapy department, being pro-active in offering activities to contribute to daily engagement and recovery of the patient population.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide activities either in one-to-one sessions or group facilitation, contributing to the therapeutic timetable on the wards.
  • To liaise with the Senior Occupational therapist and ward staff on a daily basis to ensure cohesive and effective team operation.
  • To provide effective records of all interactions and sessions with patients, which are to be included in the Occupational therapist`s reports and CTM discussions.
  • Attend and feedback within the weekly Occupational therapy department team meetings to contribute to effective team practices.
  • To attend the daily handover meetings and other ward meetings as and when required, ensuring that information is effectively communicated to the department.
  • Liaise with all departments to ensure activities are accessible to all and problem solve effectively to ensure maximum engagement opportunities.
  • To work in collaboration with the Occupational therapy department in creating a therapeutic timetable that is reflective of the current needs and interests of the wards.
  • To ensure that sessions offered are considerate of risk implications, also are reflective of relevant rehabilitation needs.
  • To ensure that activities offered are well planned, timely, organised and of professional standard.
  • Participate in Clinical Supervision and the organisation`s system of appraisal.
  • Participate in Team Building and other staff support measures in order to help the team develop.
  • Regular involvement and contribution to department audits, including participating in regular assessments of the ward area and other off ward areas to ensure a safe and effective environment to offer activities.
  • To be trained to effectively support and contribute to the de-escalation events as and when required. Completion of MVA training is compulsory.
  • To support the Occupational therapy department by contributing to regular department duties.
  • To participate in and actively support the hospital`s quality improvement programme.
  • To be conversant and follow corporate, hospital and local policies and procedures.
  • To comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and related legislation.
  • Engage in Continual Professional Development opportunities when available.
  • To provide cover and support to the other wards as and when required.
  • To participate in extended working hours, one evening per week and weekend working as per OT departmental rota as well as hospital wide events.

  • Proven skills in Art, Music, Drama or Education
  • Interest in working in a Multi-Disciplinary setting.
