The North London Clinic is looking for a Deputy Charge Nurse for its 15 bedded medium-secure unit to provide visible leadership and effective shift management to the nursing team, deputising in the absence of the Ward Manager.

The role:

As a Deputy Charge Nurse you will be working within a team that includes a range of professionals. You will be central to providing high quality care within a secure forensic setting, working with a patient group that consists of personality disordered and chronically mentally ill men.

Our Deputy Charge Nurse role involves:

  • Adhering at all times to the NMC code of professional conduct
  • Conducting a legal, ethical and accountable practice and remain open to the scrutiny of peers
  • Respecting the rights of others` sensitivity and with regard to issues of equality and diversity
  • Promoting and ensuring that each member of the team works to the standards of ethical practice
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, government and local policy and best practice including the Mental Health Act, Clinical Governance and Standards for Better Health
  • Ensuring adherence to health, safety and security legislation and policy
  • Participating in maintaining the physical, relational and procedural security of the service to ensure the safety of all
  • Recognising the value of effective communication and the potential for developing therapeutic relationships, effective teamwork, interdisciplinary working and customer care
  • Utilising effective communication to develop professional therapeutic relationships, optimise patient engagement and facilitate interdisciplinary working
  • Managing sensitive, highly complex and contentious communication, referring complex issues as appropriate
  • Promoting a culture in which the assessment, planning and review of care plans are delivered effectively within the broader responsibilities of the Primary Nurse
  • Monitoring and ensuring that all patients are actively involved in the process of care
  • Acting as a Primary Nurse for a designated group of patients
  • Ensuring  all patients have a comprehensive evidence-based risk management plan
  • Participating in and ensuring involvement in pre-admission assessment of referred patients
  • Operating effectively as a team member
  • Promoting effective decision making
  • Acting as a mentor/preceptor and ensuring the development of junior nurses and other team members
  • Encouraging and promoting innovation and imaginative problem solving
  • Ensuring compliance with audit requirements and lead implementation of recommendations
  • Ensuring compliance with legislative and professional standards
  • Acting as a clinical supervisor and ensuring that all staff participate in clinical supervision
  • Monitoring, evaluating and ensuring effective use of resources within set budgets
  • Deputising in the absence of the Ward Manager
  • Ensuring a commitment to the promotion and delivery of basic living skills within a forensic mental health care setting
  • Participating in the delivery of evidence-based interdisciplinary programmes of care
  • Supporting junior staff in their contribution to therapeutic interventions as agreed by the interdisciplinary team
  • Managing medication as per hospital policy
  • Contributing to health promotion within the ward environment
  • Applying recognised therapeutic interventions e.g. CBT, DBT
  • Engaging in and promoting continuous professional development within the team

Role requirements:

  • Successful candidates must be RMN qualified 
  • Recognised mentorship certificate desirable
  • Experience of working in a supervisory capacity
  • Experience of secure environment
