The Priory Hospital Middleton St George provides specialist inpatient care for people, of adult working age, with mental health needs who present with complex needs and behaviours that challenge, in a safe and supportive environment. The hospital has 73 beds across five wards delivering individual treatment programmes for:

  • High dependency rehabilitation for both males and females with challenging and complex needs
  • Two Specialist DBT treatment units for female personality disorder
  • Mixed 24/7 acute admission, assessment and treatment unit which also provides an inpatient detox service

We also have a small community step-down house in Darlington town centre, for males with challenging and complex needs.

The Priory Hospital Middleton St George  is rated as Good overall by the Care Quality Commission, with each of the 5 key areas of inspection all individually rated as Good.

The role:

This department aims to provide a high-quality, holistic, strengths-based, and person-centred service within the hospital setting.  During May 2015 to June 2016, the department focused on re-introducing Social Work to The Priory Hospital Middleton St George, identifying gaps in services, and building a foundation based in good practice. The department is now able to grow to continue to provide an excellent service to service user and carers. The services provided are based solely within the hospital and if community assessments are required this is referred to the community Social Worker. Additional work is needed on fully integrating Social Work into the Multidisciplinary Team and in helping other professions understand the role.

The role of the Social Worker is to participate as an active member of the Multidisciplinary Team. The Social Worker is allocated to specific wards and participates in ward rounds, risk assessments, care planning, discharge planning, decision-making and team meetings. The Social Worker`s responsibilities include:

  • To engage effectively with service users to assist with each person`s rehabilitation and recovery;
  • To provide a link with service users` locality services and the Multi-Disciplinary Team;
  • To provide a link with service users` social supports (carers, family members, friends) and the Multi-Disciplinary Team;
  • To act as Carer Champions for the hospital and promote carer engagement in service users` treatment as appropriate;
  • To support and encourage visits by making sure visits are supportive and beneficial to service users;
  • To ensure child visits are in the best interest of the child and properly risk assessed prior to a visit being approved;
  • To identify, assess and contribute to the management of risk;
  • To act as a lead in the multi-agency contact relating to matters of Safeguarding At Risk Adults, Children and Young People, acting as Appropriate Adult for police interviews, and supporting MAPPA/MARAC needs; and
  • To identify and challenge discriminatory structures and practices.
