Cragston Court is a purpose built facility providing a full recovery pathway for Residents who have enduring mental health needs.  The unit consists of a 20 bedded nursing/residential home for ages ranging from 18 to 65 and above of mixed gender.

The unit promotes recovery to the highest standard by using the tools of the recovery star and the involvement of other professionals in order to help residents along their journey of recovery. We provide 24-hour support for people with mental health care needs with a focus on encouraging daily living skill and independence. 

The Role:

Our Senior Staff Nurse role involves:

  • Adhering at all times to the NMC code of professional conduct.
  • Conducting a legal, ethical, and accountable practice and remaining open to the scrutiny of peers.
  • Respecting the rights of others sensitively and with regard to issues of equality and diversity.
  • Promoting ethical practice in others.
  • Maintaining and supporting compliance with current legislation, government, and local policy including the Mental Health Act.
  • Supporting health, safety and security within legislative requirements and in adherence to identified standards and local policy
  • Supporting the implementation of Clinical Governance and Standards for Better Health
  • Participating in maintaining the physical, relational and procedural security of the service to ensure the safety of all
  • Recognising the value of effective communication and the potential for developing therapeutic relationships, effective teamwork, interdisciplinary working, and customer care.
  • Utilising effective communication to develop professional therapeutic relationships, optimise patient engagement and facilitate interdisciplinary working
  • Managing sensitive communication.
  • Communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders
  • Supporting staff in the assessment, planning, and review of care plans in partnership with patients within an evidence based framework.
  • Acting as key worker for a designated group of patients, and associate nurse as required.
  • Compiling and supporting positive risk management plans for patients.
  • Participating in interdisciplinary pre-admission assessment of referred patients.
  • Respecting the role and function of the team and accept and support collective responsibility for team decisions.
  • Operating effectively as a team member.
  • Acting as mentor/preceptor and contributing to the development of student nurses and other members of the team.
  • Assessing health care workers within the competency development programme.
  • Leading shifts.
  • Delegating appropriately.
  • Acting as a role model for best practice.
  • Supporting innovative evidence based practice.
  • Listening and facilitating team working.
  • Supporting implementation of legal and professional standards and audit recommendations.
  • Providing clinical supervision to HCW.
  • Being aware of budgetary constraints in management of resources.
  • Understanding and working within professional boundaries.
  • Committing to and supporting the promotion and delivery of basic living skills within a forensic mental health care setting.
  • Participating in the delivery of evidence based interdisciplinary programmes of care.
  • Supporting junior staff in their contribution to therapeutic interventions as agreed by the interdisciplinary team.
  • Managing medication as per hospital policy.
  • Contributing to health promotion within the ward environment.
  • Sustaining and enhancing personal development plans through the use of organisational systems including: peer review, clinical supervision, mentorship, and appraisal.
  • Professional development activities including: Reflection on practice, training and education, audit, maintenance of professional portfolios,  the critical appraisal of research and current thinking in order to implement and support evidence based practice.
