Location:        Royston, Hertfordshire

Salary:            £45,000 - £50,000

An opportunity has become available for a competent Mechanical Engineer at a leading global provider of automated fermentation and cell culture systems to the bio-pharma, regenerative medicine and industrial biotechnology sectors. Their key focus is on early stage bioprocess development and scale up, cell therapy & stem cell research, GMP manufacture of biologics and discovery research.

Applications from ex-military personnel i.e. Navy, Royal Air Force (RAF) or Army are strongly encouraged.

This role will be suitable for an experienced engineer who can solve complex design problems in a cross-functional team environment.  Successful candidates will become part of a team of Hardware Engineers which includes Mechanical Engineers, Mechanical and Electrical Designers and Machine Control Software Engineers. They will work closely with key stakeholders, Product Managers and the Manufacturing Group to ensure that product designs meet the essential requirements for commercial success.

You must be comfortable providing the Technical Lead on projects ranging from iterative product updates to new product developments.

Main Duties:

  • Take responsibility for all aspects of hardware design, from initial concept through to production release.
  • Have a broad working knowledge of other engineering disciplines
  • Demonstrate a track record of developing designs that achieve cost and quality targets within agreed timescales
  • Lead and/or participate in design reviews to ensure that designs meet their required specifications
  • Work with the Build Team, Design Team and suppliers to identify, implement and record engineering design changes
  • Support a process of continuous improvement to help ensure that programme targets are met
  • Ensure an effective hand over of products to the Manufacturing Group to ensure a successful production release
  • Follow TAP Biosystems’ engineering processes to ensure appropriate quality is designed into all products
  • Work in close collaboration with potential customers and the internal Product Management team to define detailed system specifications for new product developments

Knowledge, skills and qualifications required:

Essential:

  • A 2:1 degree or above in  Mechanical Engineering or Systems Engineering with a strong mechanical bias
  • Be able to demonstrate experience of successfully developing and commercialising complex systems or scientific instruments for low to medium volume manufacture (up to 100 units a year).

Desirable:

  • A working knowledge of biological processes, particularly fermentation and cell culture would be an advantage
  • Sensor technology is increasingly incorporated into our new product developments and we would be interested to hear from candidates with knowledge in this area

SALARY

Ranges between £45,000 - £50,000 depending on experience.

HOURS

The Mechanical Engineer will work 40-hour weeks.
