Reporting to the HSEQ Manager, the HSEQ Assistant is required to provide assistance, direction and development of all facets in the management of the Health & Safety, Environmental and Quality controls within a fast-growing company offering a wide range of specialist services within the utilities environment.

The successful candidate would be expected to assist the HSEQ Manager in continuing a process of restructuring within the HSEQ department and the further development of HSEQ systems. You will be office based but also expected to attend meetings off-site.

Applications from ex-military personnel (Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Marines) are strongly encouraged.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide support and advice to the HSEQ Manager, other Management, and non-senior managers. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with managers, supervisors, employees, contractors/sub-contractors and external resource.
  • Deputise for HSEQ Manager when necessary
  • Attend meetings both site based and off-site
  • Assist the HSEQ Manager to manage the company’s HSEQ programme (including helping to control the client’s IMS – they currently hold ISO 90001, ISO 14001 and ISO 18001)
  • Provide an Assurance and Audit role in the company
  • Assist staff and contractors in respect of compliance with relevant legislation, client standards and contractual arrangements
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and analysis of the HSEQ performance of the Business
  • Drive philosophy of safety ownership throughout all levels of the organisation. Responsible for developing, promoting and monitoring the company’s HSEQ culture
  • Conduct accident and incident HSEQ reports and investigation
  • Maintain site safety folders, paperwork and databases relating to HSEQ
  • Have a commercial awareness when it comes to the budget constraints of the organisation
  • Proactive monitoring of site operatives’ competency accreditations along with maintenance of training database
  • Assist in the development of an in-house training and development programme

Person Specifications:

  • Holds a NEBOSH certificate as a minimum or equivalent degree
  • Educated to degree standard (preferred)
  • Meet the requirement for an articulate, dynamic and insightful individual capable of working at an operational level
  • Exceptional communication skills at all levels
  • Strong IT skills, always being ahead of new technologies
  • High integrity and openness combined with commitment to good governance
  • Energetic, highly motivated, with an enquiring mind and passion for excellence and innovation
  • Knowledge or experience within construction or related industries would be an advantage but not essential

Owing to the scale of the current expansion, the successful HSEQ Assistant must be aware that the initial months of the employment will be particularly demanding in terms of pressure and time.

Typical Hours:

Offices are open from 07:00 to 17:30 (Mon-Fri) and you would be expected to work a minimum of 45 hours a week. Working activities do extend outside of this, however overtime on weekends is negotiable.

Salary: £24,000 – £28,000 (DOE)
