Nelson House is a modern and spacious 32 bed locked rehabilitation recovery service for men and women with mental illness. By having a focus on the development of skills for independence the unit provides a positive step for patients, many whose next step will be living in the community. It helps patients learn new ways of managing their conditions and symptoms with the aim of helping to prevent any future relapse. For patients with challenging behaviours, Nelson House helps them to learn skills to change their response to anxiety and distress. 

The role:

To work as an Occupational Therapist based on a ward as part of a multi disciplinary team, with an allocated caseload of patients. To provide Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment to enable clients to achieve their maximum level of functional independence and to enhance their sense of well being through engagement in occupation. To be aware of risk and manage it through adhering to procedures/protocols and open communication

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment for an allocated caseload of patients.
  • Participate in comprehensive assessments of new patients, following the assessment pathway for nelson House Hospital.
  • Gain experience and complete a range of Model of Human Occupation standardised assessments.
  • Enable patient`s to address specific needs in relation to health and well being, respecting their dignity, wishes and beliefs and involving them in decision making and goals that are meaningful to them as part as their recovery.
  • Identify and assess potential risks involved in occupations and activities, for example outside of the ward and in the community, and take appropriate action.
  • Assess and provide environmental adaptations to facilitate daily living.
  • Devise and carry out treatment plans taking into consideration risk factors and grading of activities.
  • Use goal-setting with patients to ensure effective treatment and as an O.T. outcome measure.
  • Contribute feedback to clinical discussions and the weekly clinical team meetings.
  • Carry out individual sessions on/off the ward and in community settings.
  • Gain experience of working in open and closed groups on and off the ward.
  • Work alongside and supervise support staff in the delivery of the ward programme.
  • Engage and communicate effectively with patients using a range of communication strategies, taking into account barriers of communication e.g. cognitive impairment, physical and sensory impairments.
  • Keep up to date and accurate clinical records, maintained in accordance with professional and departmental standards, to provide a clear record of intervention of the OT service and ensure confidentiality is maintained.
  • Evaluate interventions informally after each session and through regular review reports.
  • Attend CPA`s and provide a formal written and verbal report.
  • Provide specialist advice to staff about appropriate treatment approaches and adaptive equipment for clients.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Participate actively in regular supervision with identified supervisor.
  • Document all clinical work in accordance with organisational policies.
  • Identify therapy materials and equipment required
  • Collect statistical information in accordance with service requirements
  • To be aware of ward policies and procedures.
  • Be responsible for monitoring and maintaining the health and safety and well being of patients- reporting any accidents, incidents or concerns regarding patient care according to the organisation`s guidelines.

  • Participate fully in the organisation`s performance management and staff development systems
  • Take advantage of teaching and learning opportunities available; attend relevant courses; to share information gained and skills learned with other members of the team.
