Nelson House is a modern and spacious 32 bed locked rehabilitation recovery service for men and women with mental illness. By having a focus on the development of skills for independence the unit provides a positive step for patients, many whose next step will be living in the community. It helps patients learn new ways of managing their conditions and symptoms with the aim of helping to prevent any future relapse. For patients with challenging behaviours, Nelson House helps them to learn skills to change their response to anxiety and distress. 

The role:

As a Recovery Support Worker you will be working within a team, which includes a range of professionals.  You will make an effective contribution to providing high quality care within a locked rehabilitation hospital.

The patient group consists of personality disordered individuals and those experiencing enduring mental illness.

You will work within an identified career development pathway and be expected to complete appropriate competency development portfolios.

Patients rights and the Mental Health Act

  • An awareness of and commitment to the promotion of patient`s rights and responsibilities, anti-discriminatory practice, equality and diversity.
  • A recognition and awareness of strategies for dealing with the conflicts and dilemmas arising from human rights and legislative responsibilities.

Communication and Therapeutic Relationships

  • Demonstrates therapeutic engagement with the patient group.
  • An awareness of therapeutic boundaries and the need for a consistent approach to patient care.
  • Recognises the importance of maintaining relationships with patient`s family, carers, other disciplines, and agencies.
  • Recognises the need for effective communication including record keeping.

Health, Safety and Security

  • Demonstrates competence in the role of liaison.
  • Contributes to the maintenance of a safe, clean, and homely environment.
  • To participate in maintaining the physical, relational and procedural security of the service to ensure the safety of all.
  • As part of your role you may be required to assist in the management of challenging situations including the management of violence and aggression. In those situations you may be required to utilise physical means managing the situation through `management of violence and aggression` techniques.  As a result you will be required to undertake the preparatory training.  This is a basic requirement of all Nurses and Healthcare Workers within Partnerships in Care.  It is therefore imperative that you are physically able to participate.

Effective Team working

  • Recognises their own role and contribution to the patients care team and the wider ward and multi-disciplinary teams.

Activities of Daily Living

  •  Recognises their potential contribution to a range of activities of daily living including basic nursing care, social and recreational activity including driving for patient journeys, and health promotion.

Mental Illness and Challenging Behaviour

  • Takes a positive approach to the management of challenging behaviour and recognises the need for physical interventions as a last resort.

Care Delivery

  • Recognises the value of care and management plans and their own responsibilities to work within these plans.

Professional Development

  • To engage in clinical supervision
  • To complete regulatory and compliance training
  • To complete competency portfolio.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Good communication skills

Qualifications

  • Education to GCSE Standard
  • NVQ or equivalent would be an advantage in H&SC.
